Activities in Lourdes

Lourdes' geographical position, at the foot of the mountains, makes it an ideal starting-point of excursions to the Pyrenees. It is the perfect destination for adventure travelers with numerous outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and more that are close by. The Pyrenean cities of Pau and Tarbes are only a few minutes away. There are many natural sites in the surroundings to discover. Travel through the enchanting countryside, meet with nature, fresh air or simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings…

Le Pic du Jer

Le Pic du Jer (which is the start of the Pyrenees) overlooks Lourdes and can be recognized by its large cross, which shines bright at night. To enjoy a stunning view over the town you can take the 100-year-old chair-lift to the summit (1000m). If you rather make some exercise you can also walk up all the way to the top!

Hiking

The surroundings of Lourdes offer absolutely fantastic hiking opportunities. 90 km of sign-posted walking paths await you. Make an early start and just wander around and you will be surprised on what natural beauties you might come across.

Artouste

Although it looks like a little toy train, Artouste is the highest tourist train in Europe. It goes around the mountain at an altitude of 2,000 meters (6,560 ft.) on a 10 km narrow-gauge track. The excursion lasts 3 hours and a half, it covers the cable-car and the train return trip with a stop at the lake of Artouste. During the excursion, you will be able to admire the panoramic view over the Ossau Mountains and breathtaking views of the valley of Soussoueou.

Musée Pyrenean

This museum with a collection of Pyrenean fauna, all sorts of fascinating pastoral and farming gear, and an interesting section on the history of Pyrenean mountaineering is situated in a castle. Outside in the rock garden you will find some beautiful typical Pyrenean style houses and churches.

Basilica of the Rosary

After the original chapel became too small for the hordes of visitors that began to descend after the sightings, a new church was built. The Basilica of the Rosary is one of the largest Romanesque style cathedrals in the world. The square in front of the church can hold almost 80.000 people. It is very interesting to see the actual cave where the young girl claimed to have spoken to the Virgin Mary and where an endless stream of visitors come in search of a spiritual experience or a miraculous healing.
