Destination The French AlpsAfter Paris and the Cote d’Azur, the Alps are France’s third most popular tourist region. The Alps, Europe’s largest mountain range, is spread over France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Slovenia. It attracts many travelers during the summer and winter season alike. The French Alps are renowned for their stunning scenery complete with beautiful mountains, rolling foothills, and pristine lakes and rivers. The largest of its stunning lakes are Lake Geneva, Lake Annecy, and Lake Bourget; these lakes are year-round attractions for their beauty and provide also access to numerous water sports. From the Mediterranean to the Rhine, the Alps stretch along the southeastern flank of France. The skiing here is the best in Europe. Some resorts are legendary, such as the capital of Alpine skiing, the chic and elegant town Chamonix. The Mont Blanc, at 4,807 m (15,771 ft.), is the highest mountain in Western Europe. |
