Marseille was founded 600 BC by the Greeks. Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Marseille is France its largest commercial port and the vibrant capital of Southern Europe. Despite many misfortunes such as the plague that killed over 100,000 people in its days and many attacks from enemy armies, Marseille was always able to bounce back. This vibrant and energetic city is known for its delicious Bouillabaisse and the national Anthem the Marseillaise. In 1792, during the French Revolution, 500 volunteers from Marseille sung the war song of the Rhine on every stop on their way to Paris. The crowds loved it and the National Anthem, the Marseillaise, was born.

Millions of immigrants entered France through Marseille. Italians, Algerians, Armenians, Greek and Vietnamese gave the city a bustling, exotic and colorful image.
