Saint Malo
Destination Saint MaloThe popular tourist destination Saint Malo is situated in Northern Brittany and is attracting many tourists in summer. During the summer season the streets of Saint Malo are filled with street artist and entertainers. This interesting cobblestone coastal town thanks its popularity to its various historical sights and pleasant beaches. The traces of this ancient city go back to the early monastic settlement that arrived here in the 6th century. And then Saint Malo grew in the 17th and 18th centuries, with traders, seamen, and privateers. Privateers were not just lawless pirates or buccaneers; they had permission from the King to attack enemy shipping. Fisherman equipped their ships with canons and weapons and took off to the wide-open sea. If they made it home after months or even years of chasing unescorted merchant vessels, they shared their loot with the crown. Go back in time and visit to the House of Corsair´s. During the Second World War St. Malo was bombarded and almost 80% of the town was destroyed. Only the massive, imposing ramparts encircling the town escaped damage. Luckily Saint Malo has been carefully reconstructed and the fascinating historic center looks nearly identical to its original. Walk the 2 km of massive, imposing ramparts that surround the old town and enjoy the breathtaking view on the bay of St. Malo. Discover the picturesque streets and the privateer's dwellings as you walk into the Historical District. Sights are marked by pathways. The old walled town built on a rock seems to be striding majestically into the waves. Let the surroundings of St. Malo impress you! Leave the walls and the old town behind you and explore the enchanting beaches and most remarkable forts along the coastline. |
