Founded by the Phoenicians, and survived through the Roman Times, St Tropez played an important role in the military history of the region. Throughout the Middle Ages, the town was known to bring out fine sailors, navigators and naval strategists. The harbor of St Tropez was one of the safest in the area and was often used as a port of refuge in stormy weather. During the early 20th century it became a center of Bohemian artists. Famous painters such as Matisse and Paul Signac moved to this lovely sunny town. After the Second World War tourist started to visit the town and soon St Tropez became a glittery, stylish resort, bustling with a trendy as well as a cultural scene.
